Plane with 3 aboard missing near South Pole

An aircraft carrying three men went missing in Antarctica on Monday and the plane?s emergency locator beacon was activated, according to the National Science Foundation. ?

The status of those aboard remains unknown, NSF spokesman Peter West said Wednesday.?The Toronto Star reported that the three men are Canadian.

West said those aboard were likely a pilot, co-pilot and a flight engineer carrying or picking up cargo. They had been contracted to support a branch of the?Italian Antarctic Program that focuses on new technology and energy?? specifically nuclear fusion and fission.

The aircraft, a de Havilland Twin Otter, was returning from the South Pole to Terra Nova Bay, where the Italian Antarctic Program is based, when contact was lost as the plane flew over a remote area of the Transantarctic Mountains.

The plane was contracted out by Kenn Borek Air Ltd., a Canadian company based in Calgary that charters aircraft to the U.S. Antarctic program.

Rescue crews, based at the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center, know generally where the beacon is coming from, but cloudy and windy conditions have prevented rescue planes from attempting a landing near the downed plane.

?There are not as many weather stations, so it?s difficult to find out what the weather is,? West said. ?There was low cloud, limited visibility in the air in the area where they were looking for the aircraft -- some blowing snow and issues with cloud.?

West said he didn?t know whether the flight crew carried cold weather survival gear. At the U.S. station, protocol demands that anyone leaving the base must have protective gear ? typically a parka, wind pants, insulated boots, a tent, food and a stove to melt snow into water.

He said that he doesn't recall a similar crash in his 14 years as a spokesman for the Antarctic program.

Antarctica, the size of U.S. and Mexico combined, is vast, white and isolated. There are about 50 research stations, some of them year-round, others open during research season, which runs roughly between October and early February ? summer in the Southern Hemisphere. During those months, the largest is McMurdo Station, the U.S. Antarctic station on Ross Island, with about 1,100 people.

?It?s a harsh continent,? West said. ?People take extra care if they can.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sting's daughter Mickey Sumner has signed up to make her off-Broadway debut in Craig Lucas's new comedy "The Lying Lesson."

The Atlantic Theater Company said Tuesday that Sumner, whose credits also include the new Noah Baumbach film "Frances Ha," will star opposite Carol Kane in the comic thriller.

Kane plays a woman who may or may not be legendary screen star Bette Davis and Sumner will portray a woman who tries to discover her true identity.

Previews begin Feb. 20 with an opening set for March 13. Tony Award-nominated director Pam MacKinnon will replace Anna D. Shapiro as the play's director.

Sumner, whose mother is Trudie Styler, made her New York stage debut in a Culture Project workshop of "The Seagull" and is featured in the Showtime series "The Borgias."

Mugabe buries deputy Nkomo, urges peaceful Zimbabwe poll

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Monday buried his deputy, John Nkomo, whose death from cancer has underscored concerns about the 88-year-old leader's own health problems and succession plans.

Mugabe, who has been in power for more than three decades, is seeking another five-year term as president after his ZANU-PF party chose him as its candidate for elections due this year despite fears he is battling prostate cancer.

Making no reference to his own health, Mugabe called for peaceful elections and praised Nkomo, who died last week, as a man of principle who worked to foster political reconciliation between rival parties.

The southern African country has a history of violent and disputed elections, including one in 2008 that led Mugabe and arch rival Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) to form a compromise unity government.

Mugabe told thousands of mourners at a Harare shrine to heroes of Zimbabwe's independence struggle that the best tribute to Nkomo would be a smooth election.

"Peace, unity and harmony should prevail in the country if we desire to move forward," he said in the hour-long address.

The Heroes' Acre speech was interrupted by heavy rain and a power cut to the public address system - a reminder of the economic woes that have bedevilled the former British colony since Mugabe's seizure of commercial farms in 2000.

Africa's oldest leader, who normally uses such platforms to attack his opponents, sounded conciliatory and urged Zimbabweans to bury "petty personal differences" over politics.

Despite the soothing words, critics say Mugabe is not doing enough to control militant ZANU-PF supporters, some of whom booed Tsvangirai when a cabinet minister acknowledged his presence before Mugabe's address.

Rights groups on Friday condemned what they called an escalating campaign against ZANU-PF critics ahead of elections, which could be held by September.

The civic organisations, including church and legal groups, said there was a "well-calculated and intensified" assault on rights activists, journalists and artists through slander, intimidation, raids, arrests and prosecutions.

Investing in S. Korea Today is Like Buying the U.S. in the 1990s ...

The Brewing S. Korean Tech Boom

Like the U.S. in the late 1990s, though obviously on smaller scale, South Korea has become a technological leader-- especially in display systems like portable computers that can be rolled up like a newspaper and stem cell biotech innovations.

Indeed, its lead in genetic engineering may become more strategic in nature, since Korean public policy does not place the limitations on biotech innovation that the United States does.

What's new is that South Korea is now also a cultural leader, with its "Gangnam Style" pop phenomenon sweeping the world. That's small potatoes in terms of immediate revenues, but it does allow Korea to attract the young, style-conscious and footloose (among whom are many of the world's innovators) in a way it could never have done twenty years ago.

Currently,Korean growth is solid rather than exciting, with The Economist team of forecasters projecting 3.4% growth in 2013.

Nevertheless, with public spending only 33% of GDP compared to 40% in the U.S, a balance of payments surplus and inflation currently running at 1.2% and short-term interest rates well above inflation at close to 3%,

South Korea' economy is poised for a growth acceleration in a way the U.S. economy is not.

With elections out of the way for another 4 years and rapid growth in its huge but poor Chinese neighbor, faster growth should be heading Korea's way.

A Fiscally Fit Government

But those aren't the only reasons to invest. Based U.S. accounting methods, South Korea also runs a budget surplus.

Admittedly, Korea-skeptics like to point out that if you exclude social security, the country runs a deficit of around 0.5-1% of GDP. But if you exclude social security, the United States didn't run a surplus in the late 1990s either.

Like the U.S. in the 1990s and for similar demographic reasons, South Korea actually runs a surplus of 2.5-3% on its social security account since considerably more people are paying into the account than are drawing from it.

Including that surplus, South Korea will run a surplus of 1.5-2.0% of GDP in 2012.

That means the South Korea stands to benefit from its baby boom being a decade or so from retirement, the same way the U.S. benefited from its boomers in the late 1990s.

But you should also note that South Korea's budget is also at least as solid as the U.S. budgets from the1990s. Including social security contributions, Korea has managed to run a surplus in an international environment that is certainly not as bullish as it was the latter 1990s.

What's more, the KOSPI share index is still below its 2007 highs, compared to the late 1990s when U.S. indexes were running at more than double their peak pre-1995 levels.

Three Ways to Invest in South Korea

There are number of ways to play the South Korean market. Here are three:

The largest Korea-oriented ETF listed in the U.S. is the iShares MSCI South Korea Index ETF (NYSE:EWY).

With net assets of $3.34 billion and an expense ratio of only 0.61% EWY is an efficient way of getting exposure to the market as a whole. Currently it has a P/E ratio of only 9 times earnings but a yield of only 0.6%

Korean banks are also very reasonably valued in terms of net assets, yet are currently nicely profitable. The largest is KB Financial Group (NYSE: KB) the parent group of Kookmin Bank. It is currently trading at only 64% of book value and 6.6 times projected 2013 earnings. Based on last year's dividend it yields about 3.2%.

And as mentioned above, Korea is a world leader in display technologies and its leading company is LG Display (NYSE: LPL). LPL has suffered in 2011-12 from a cyclical downturn, but its third quarter 2012 was once again profitable, and based on analysts' estimates it should make about $1.50 per share in 2013, putting it on a forward P/E of 9.3 times.

While a little internet detective work certainly won't always reveal the exact type of person the interviewer is, it at least gives you a good idea of how to behave in the interview. Since they've likely done the same thing to you, it also puts you on slightly equal footing during the interview itself.
