Record set in solar cell efficiency - with light of a thousand suns

11 hrs.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy have created a solar cell that can convert 44 percent of sunlight hitting it into electrical energy, setting a new record for solar cell?efficiency. But it was only achieved by multiplying the power of the sun by nearly 1,000.

The ongoing research is being done at the III-V Multijunction Photovoltaics group at the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where the previous record of 43.5 percent was set. So while it's not a huge leap in efficiency, it's still a record.

The researchers achieve these high efficiencies by stacking multiple "junctions" into a single solar cell, each of which absorbs light at a slightly different wavelength. The "III-IV" in the name refers to the fact that the elements used?come from the third and fifth columns of the periodic table.

A new material with many desirable properties was?discovered by accident (gallium arsenide diluted with nitrogen), but proved extremely difficult to manufacture. Researchers needed to use a technique called molecular beam epitaxy to minimize impurities in the material ? but no one in the world could do it.

Solar Junction, a company started by researchers from Stanford University, decided to take up the challenge. With a few million dollars in funding, Solar Junction and NREL managed to make the new process work. The result was the "SJ3" cell, which has been breaking records ever since.

The catch is that it's not like a traditional solar cell, which simply receives sunlight on its surface and creates a modest charge from the photons. The SJ3 cell requires the power of the sun to be multiplied by special lenses, creating a beam of light hundreds of times brighter than ordinary sunlight.

In this kind of system, the power is measured in "suns": A beam 10?times brighter than the sun would be described simply as 10 suns. And?the previous efficiency record was set by a lens system that created 415 suns. The latest record was set using 947 suns.

Naturally, one may wonder if such a design is practical ? after all, how often does the sun shine a thousand times brighter than normal? But the lenses actually take normal sunlight that might have hit in a diffuse way on normal cells and concentrate it onto the more efficient SJ3 cell. So in the end it's just using the same area of sunlight in a different way.

The NREL emphasized in the report describing the record that the SJ3 design can easily replace solar systems used in satellites and other space-bound machines ? but it's lighter and more efficient, reducing rocket load and allowing for more onboard electronics.

What's next? Tweaking the design to include a germanium layer used previously could raise efficiency as high as 50 percent ? definitely?a major landmark in solar power, if researchers?can achieve it, although applying it to everyday power needs is another project?altogether.

Information on other research being done by the NREL, including other forms of solar cells and systems, can be found at their webpage. More technical details about the SJ3 cell are in?the NREL article describing the record.

Moscow sees U.S.-Russia talks with Syria envoy Brahimi next month

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia expects to meet senior U.S. officials on Syria next month to discuss with international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi his proposals to end the 21-month-old conflict there, the Kremlin's envoy to the region said on Friday.

Brahimi will fly to Moscow on Saturday for talks on the results of his negotiations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his opponents during a five-day trip to Damascus in which he called for political change to end the bloodshed.

"We will listen to what Lakhdar Brahimi has to say about the situation in Syria and after that, probably, there will be a decision to hold a new meeting of the 'three Bs'," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikahil Bogdanov said - making a word play on the first letter of the diplomats' last names.

Bogdanov, U.S. Undersecretary of State William Burns and Brahimi, the joint special representative of the United Nations and the Arab League, agreed that a political solution to the crisis was necessary and possible in talks earlier this month.

Bogdanov said another meeting of the three "will take place already in January after the holidays."

Brahimi, who has called for a transitional government to rule until elections, is trying to broker a peaceful transfer of power in Syria, where more than 44,000 people have been killed in a revolt against four decades of Assad family rule.

What role Assad and members of his government might play in a transitional body - a plan outlined in an international agreement in Geneva six months ago - has divided world powers.

Past peace efforts have floundered as what began as peaceful protests in March 2011 has turned to civil war and an increasingly sectarian struggle between mostly Sunni Muslim rebels and Assad's security forces, drawn primarily from his Shi'ite-rooted Alawite minority.

World powers believe Russia, which has given Assad military and diplomatic aid to help him weather the uprising, has the ear of Syria's government and must be a central player in any peace talks.

Moscow has tried to distance itself from Assad in recent months and has said it is not propping him up, but it maintains Assad's exit from power cannot be a precondition to talks.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that time was running out to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and halt a descent into "bloody chaos," during a meeting with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad in Moscow.

Trains carrying more oil across US amid boom

(AP) ? Energy companies behind the oil boom on the Northern Plains are increasingly turning to an industrial-age workhorse ? the locomotive ? to move their crude to refineries across the U.S., as plans for new pipelines stall and existing lines can't keep up with demand.

Delivering oil thousands of miles by rail from the heartland to refineries on the East, West and Gulf coasts costs more, but it can mean increased profits ? up to $10 or more a barrel ? because of higher oil prices on the coasts. That works out to about $700,000 per train.

The parade of mile-long trains carrying hazardous material out of North Dakota and Montana and across the country has experts and federal regulators concerned. Rail transport is less safe than pipelines, they say, and the proliferation of oil trains raises the risk of a major derailment and spill.

Since 2009, the number of train cars carrying crude hauled by major railroads has jumped from about 10,000 a year to a projected 200,000 in 2012. Much of that has been in the Northern Plains' Bakken crude patch, but companies say oil trains are rolling or will be soon from Texas, Colorado and western Canada.

"This is all occurring very rapidly, and history teaches that when those things happen, unfortunately, the next thing that is going to occur would be some sort of disaster," said Jim Hall, a transportation consultant and former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Rail companies said the industry places a priority on safety and has invested heavily in track upgrades, provided emergency training and taken other measures to guard against accidents. There have been no major oil train derailments from the Bakken, according to federal regulators.

Union Pacific Railroad CEO Jack Koraleski said hauling oil out of places like North Dakota will be a long-term business for railroads because trains are faster than pipelines, reliable and offer a variety of destinations.

"The railroads are looking at this as a unique opportunity, a game-changing opportunity for their business," said Jeffery Elliot, a rail expert with the New York-based consulting firm Oliver Wyman.

BNSF Railway Co., the prime player in the Bakken, has bolstered its oil train capacity to a million barrels a day and expects that figure to increase further. To accommodate the growth, in part, the railroad is sinking $197 million into track upgrades and other improvements in Montana and North Dakota.

BNSF is also increasing train sizes, from 100 oil cars per train to as many as 118.

Larger trains are harder to control, and that increases the chances of something going wrong, safety experts said. State and local emergency officials worry about a derailment in a population center or an environmentally sensitive area such as a river crossing.

Rail accidents occur 34 times more frequently than pipeline ones for every ton of crude or other hazardous material shipped comparable distances, according to a recent study by the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank. The Association of American Railroads contends the study was flawed but acknowledges the likelihood of a rail accident is double or triple the chance of a pipeline problem.

The environmental fears carry an ironic twist: Oil trains are gaining popularity in part because of a shortage of pipeline capacity ? a problem that has been worsened by environmental opposition to such projects as TransCanada's stalled Keystone XL pipeline. That project would carry Bakken and Canadian crude to the Gulf of Mexico.

Wayde Schafer, a North Dakota spokesman for the Sierra Club, described rail as "the greater of two evils" because trains pass through cities, over waterways and through wetlands that pipelines can be built to avoid.

"It's an accident waiting to happen. It's going to be a mess and we don't know where that mess is going to be," Schafer said.

For oil companies, the embrace of rail is a matter of expediency. Oil-loading rail terminals can be built in a matter of months, versus three to five years for pipelines to clear regulatory hurdles and be put into service, said Justin Kringstad of the North Dakota Pipeline Authority. Although more pipelines are in the works, Kringstad said moving oil by rail will continue.

The surge comes at the right time for railroads: Coal shipments ? a mainstay of the rail industry ? have suffered because of competition from cheap natural gas.

In the eastern U.S., CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads haven't seen as much growth because oil from the Marcellus Shale area of Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York is close enough to refineries that trucks haul the crude.

Yet BNSF is beginning to haul Bakken crude east to Chicago, where it hands off the tank cars to CSX or Norfolk Southern for delivery to Eastern refineries. It has also sent oil to the West Coast, a trend that could increase if Alaska crude production falters, as some industry observers are predicting.

The growth will require significant upgrades to already congested rail lines, industry analysts said.

Overall, crude oil shipments still represent less than 1 percent of all carloads. And there are far more dangerous materials aboard the nation's trains, including explosives, poisonous gases and other industrial chemicals.

But emergency officials are increasingly wary of major accidents involving oil trains, which carry far more cargo than some other hazardous-material trains.

While oil is not as volatile as some other products, a rupture of just one car can spill 20,000 to 30,000 gallons, said Sheldon Lustig, a rail expert who consults with local governments on accidents and hazardous materials.

Recognizing the risks, Houston-based Musket Corp., an operator of oil train terminals in North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma, has donated spill equipment and provided training to fire officials.

"You want to be a good steward in that community," said Musket managing director JP Fjeld-Hansen.

Federal Railroad Administration officials said they have coordinated hazardous-material training seminars and sought more law enforcement patrols for rail crossings to increase safety.

Federal law requires railroads to select hazardous-material routes after analyzing the potential for accidents in heavily populated areas and environmentally sensitive spots. Those analyses are confidential for security reasons.

Lustig said the railroads have considerable sway over the process.

"Under federal guidelines, the railroad makes the analysis, the railroad decides what they want to do, and the railroad does it," he said. "There is no public accountability."

Baldness and common treatments - ArticlesWide.com

The first step in treating baldness is to perform a detailed evaluation of the scalp and analyze the causes that may be responsible for the condition. An experienced hair surgeon will first explore the possibility of any reversible medical condition that may have resulted in the baldness. If such a cause is identified, an appropriate treatment plan must be made to eliminate the root cause of the problem.

However, if no specific reversible condition that may be causing baldness is identified, the doctor may recommend one of the available medical therapies or hair transplant surgery. Some of the popular FDA-approved medical treatments include Rogaine, Propecia and low level light treatment. Rogaine is a topical treatment that must be applied twice a day. Propecia is taken in the pill form once a day. Low level light therapy is performed under medical supervision two times per week.

These medical treatments are successful in the short-term and manage to reverse the rapidly increasing baldness. Sometimes they may even result in new hair growth in the balding areas. However, the limitation of these therapies is that as soon as the treatment is stopped, the condition of hair loss resumes. Therefore, the only truly effective and permanent solution to the problem is baldness is hair transplant surgery. Most satisfactory results have been achieved with this surgery for a vast majority of patients who choose to undergo the procedure.

Hair transplant surgery is primarily performed in two ways, which include Follicular Hair Extraction (FUE) and Strip Hair Transplant surgery.

Both procedures have their own advantages and limitations, but it's optimal results for baldness http://baldness.webs.com/

The key to success in both cases is how the hair surgeon approaches the problem and what treatment plan he or she devises to restore the patients hair in a natural looking way.Male baldness doesn't have to affect you unless you let it. ABC's World News Highlights Walters Wondering How Obamas Get ...

ABC News had to wait two weeks to get on air Barbara Walters? interview with the Obamas -- and then the network?s evening newscast decided to focus on her asking Barack and Michelle Obama about their sex life.

?An ABC News exclusive,? fill-in World News anchor David Muir teased, ?Barbara Walters at the White House, asking Michelle Obama if she?ll run for office next. And a personal question, too.? Viewers were then treated to a clip of Walters with the Obamas: ?How do you keep the fire going?? The two laughed as Mrs. Obama giggled: ?That?s a good question!?

Audio: MP3 clip

The silly Walters session with the Obamas, which ran on Wednesday night?s December 26 Nightline as ?Christmas at the White House with Barbara Walters,? was originally scheduled to air as a 20/20 special on Friday night, December 14, but had to be postponed because of the mass murder that day which led to an ABC News special that night.

The two-and-a-half minute excerpt aired on Wednesday?s World News started with Walters asking about daughter Malia?s dating life, before Walters moved on to the sex life of Malia?s parents:

Mr. President, Mrs. Obama. There is a photograph of you that went viral, became the most shared photograph in the history of Twitter. How do you keep the fire going?

Walters next pushed Mrs. Obama to follow in Hillary Clinton?s footsteps:

You know Mrs. Obama, you told me at one point that you would never run for political office. You?ve said that you don?t have the patience for political life. Patience for what?

The subsequent Nightline was all light-hearted, starting with a tour of White House decorations, a lot of time delighting in pet dog Bo and questions from kids. The Nightline segments included another hard-hitting exchange previewed on the December 14 Good Morning America: ?You have an iPad...What?s your favorite app?? (Answer: Scrabble)

Denon Cocoon Portable

Lately, we've seen a slew of wireless speakers hit the market, be they Bluetooth options or systems that use Apple's AirPlay. Several, like the Denon Cocoon Portable, attempt to sweeten the deal of wireless music even more by adding rechargeable portability as a feature, as well as Android and Windows streaming compatibility. At $499.99 (direct), however, you'd expect the Cocoon Portable to offer powerful, distortion-free audio, and unfortunately, that isn't always the case. Deep bass tracks cause substantial distortion at top volumes, making the system's otherwise solid feature set a bit less compelling.

Design
As far as AirPlay docks go, the 7.1-by-13.8-by-5.4-inch (HWD), 7.3-pound Denon Cocoon Portable doesn't break any new territory, at least visually. The main color scheme is the seemingly Apple-ordained black with metallic accents that nearly every other AirPlay option uses. But the portable speaker is easy to carry around with its built-in handle, and its contour is water and sand resistant, to boot.

Unlike the majority of AirPlay speakers, the Cocoon Portable also has an actual built-in charging dock. The docking tray pops out when you press it and houses an LED status display, which scrolls artist and song title info when streaming from an iOS device or when one is docked.

Across the top panel, a series of touch sensitive buttons controls Playback, Volume, and whatever your sound source is?it switches between radio presets and whatever device you're streaming from or have docked.

The metallic mesh speaker grille covers the rounded front panel and hides two 25-watt, 4-inch drivers. Along the back panel, there's a power adapter connection for the included power supply, a 3.5mm Aux input, an Ethernet port, buttons labeled Netlink and WPS (both used during set-up), a Loudness button (more on that later), and the Power switch.?

The manual is included on a CD, which is useless for several devices this speaker is designed to work with, including some recent computers, so I don't really understand the logic there. Also included is a small, membrane-buttoned remote control with Power, Volume, Play/Pause, Track Navigation, and Sound Source, but it lacks full menu navigation. This would be more of an annoyance if you couldn't just use your device's on-screen controls to navigate menus?since you'll likely be streaming, your device is basically its own remote control. There's a nook on the back panel for storing the remote.Denon Cocoon Portable rear panel

Setting up the Cocoon Portable to stream wireless audio from an iOS device is simple?dock it, download the Denon app when you're prompted to, and follow the simple instructions. You'll need a Wi-Fi network and its password, but that's about all you need to have handy. The Netlink button on the back exists for routers that don't support WPS?press it and follow the instructions on the app. The app also doubles as an alarm clock, which is useful if you keep the Cocoon near your bed and want to wake up listening to music.

The system supports streaming via Apple's AirPlay, but it also supports Android devices, and streaming from most Windows computers. Denon estimates the rechargeable battery has a roughly 5 hour life on a full charge.?

Performance
In terms of controlling it, the Cocoon can be a bit of a troublemaker. My docked iPhone 4S, with no AirPlay or Wi-Fi involved, would often respond to on-display volume adjustments to the phone with a multiple-second delay. So you think you're turning it up, but after a few seconds and no result, you boost things a little more, and then a few seconds later, your actions catch up with you and you end up blasting the speakers or cutting their volume more drastically than intended.?Using AirPlay causes similar delays.

The loudness button is a relic of older times?it adds a bass boost boost and some digital signal processing when you listen at lower volumes, and does something similar at higher volumes, too. It's a fairly harmless, but unnecessary, feature, as the Cocoon Portable sounds crisper and clearer with the Loudness button not engaged.

As for audio performance, the Cocoon Portable sounds just fine at moderate-to-loud volumes. But when you really pump the volume, expect distortion to rear its ugly head on tracks with deep bass, regardless of whether the Loudness button is engaged. At maximum volume, the Knife's "Silent Shout" becomes a crackling, fuzzy, distorting mess, and even at about 85 percent, things are dicey. This isn't shocking when you look at the Cocoon Portable itself?it's not tiny, but it is lightweight and designed to be portable. It doesn't have the look or feel of an extremely powerful speaker system.

You'll never mistake the Cocoon Portable for a system with a built-in subwoofer, but its bass performance is not anemic, either.?The real strength of its audio performance is the delivery of low-mid and high-mid frequencies; bass guitars, vocals, and middle-register instruments have the majority of the spotlight here.?Rock and pop is delivered with crisp highs and enough low-end presence to round things out nicely.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the highs and mids are delivered with a nice treble edge to them. The higher register strings and percussion are never overly bright, but are definitely the stars of the mix. Lower register strings are delivered with a tiny bit of bass boost, but nothing that makes them sound muddy or over-the-top. if anything, it's the highs that sound a tad over-boosted, but it helps keep things articulate. The Loudness button adds a bit of spacial sense and depth to the sound, as well as some brightness, but nothing extra is really needed to begin with, so we recommend keeping it off. Especially on this track, it seemed to add so much brightness that the shakers in the background were almost hissing.?

Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," when played at moderate volumes, is reproduced with a sharp treble edge on the attack of the kick drum loop, while the sub-bass synth part that plays beneath the beat is delivered with subtlety. Again, this system is not really for bass lovers. Hip hop tracks like this one don't sound bad, but the vocals and mid-range aspects of the mix are the elements that stand out most; the low frequencies are there, but take a secondary role. At top volumes, this track also distorts.

The built-in Internet radio options are nice, but the touch sensitive buttons on the top control panel are also slow to respond, so actually switching between stations and creating presets is a bit of an annoyance. Regardless, the inclusion of Internet radio, along with three presets, is a plus, and you can also access the stations via the free Denon controller app.

So, the portability, water resistance, Internet radio, and rechargeable battery add convenience to the Apple, Android, and PC-friendly streaming Cocoon. It reminds us of another recent multi-faceted streaming system, the Pioneer A3 (XW-SMA3-K). Both speaker units offer excellent extra features, but the sound performance is not necessarily a huge strength.

It's more Denon's pricing that seems off. The Cocoon Portable is priced like a system that is more powerful and won't distort at top volumes, thanks in part to the wireless functionality and portability. If you're looking for a booming bass system that's also portable, the Cocoon Portable is not it. If you don't listen to much music with deep bass content and you plan to listen at more moderate levels, the audio performance is far more forgiving, and even sounds like a high quality system.

If you're looking for a wireless portable speaker with booming bass, consider the?Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox Portable. For a more refined, less booming audio experience, the wireless Libratone Zipp is a solid, stylish choice. And if you're looking for a smaller, more easily portable wireless option without sacrificing too much audio performance, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker is a strong Bluetooth choice that's easy to pack. For the money, the Denon Cocoon Portable offers several laudable features, but it's hard to get past the distortion issues at high volumes.

Unrest breaks out near French embassy in CAR

(AP) ? Angry protesters carrying clubs threw rocks at the French Embassy in Central African Republic on Wednesday, criticizing the former colonial power for failing to do more to stem a rapid rebel advance as fears grew that the insurgents aim to seize the capital.

The demonstrations began earlier in the day outside the U.S. Embassy before about 100 protesters then took to the French Embassy, carrying pieces of cardboard with messages that read: "No to war! No to France!"

"It's France who colonized us ? they should support us until the end. Unfortunately, they have done nothing. In this case, we are merely asking purely and simply that they leave our country," shouted one young demonstrator in front of the French mission in Bangui.

The protesters then began stopping cars to verify whether any foreign nationals were inside.

"These people have taken down the French flag from its pole and removed it," said Serge Mucetti, the French ambassador to Central African Republic. "They have carried out stone-throwing in the area of the embassy and have broken windows. This kind of behavior is unacceptable."

Air France confirmed Wednesday that its once-a-week flight to Bangui turned back because of protests at the French Embassy. The decision was made independently by Air France, and the French government did not make the request, said an airline spokeswoman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because company policy did not authorize her to speak on the record.

The French foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Many fear that Bangui, a city of about 600,000 people, could be the scene of a battle between government forces and the rebels. The fighters already have seized at least 10 towns, meeting little resistance from soldiers.

Rebel Col. Djouma Narkoyo said Wednesday that his forces have continued taking towns in recent days because government forces are attacking their positions. But, he insisted via phone: "Our intention is not to take Bangui. We still remain open to dialogue."

Bangui residents were skeptical of the insurgents' intentions.

"We are afraid by what we see happening in our country right now," said Leon Modomale, a civil servant in the capital. "It's as if the rebels are going to arrive in Bangui any moment now because there are too many contradictions in their language."

The rebel advance began earlier this month, with a push by the Union for the Democratic Forces for Unity, known by its French acronym of UFDR. The group signed an April 13, 2007, peace accord, which paved the way for the fighters to join the regular army, but the group's leaders say the deal was never properly implemented.

Central African Republic is a desperately poor, landlocked country that has suffered numerous rebellions since independence from France. Despite the nation's wealth of gold, diamonds, timber and uranium, the government remains perpetually cash-strapped.

U.S. special forces troops have deployed to Central African Republic among other countries in the region in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the fugitive rebel leader of the notorious Lord's Resistance Army.

Commercial Aviation from the 1920?s-1930 | Travel & Leisure Story ...

Aviation

Commercial Aviation from the 1920?s-1930

The start of scheduled passenger services in the United States was not known, according to Roger Bilstein an aviation historian. Passengers were transported by Silas Christofferson via hydroplane from San Francisco to Oakland harbors in 1913. A Benoist flying boat successfully flew passengers from Tampa to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1914.
Lawson C-2 was the first multiengine airplane designed for commercial air travel. Alfred W. Lawson built it in 1919. Since there are cheaper military airplanes available the Lawson C-2 did not become successful. Lawson built another model called L-4; this can carry 34 passengers and about 6,000 pounds of mail. It crashed on its test flight and discouraged the development of large planes.

Inglis Uppercu a Florida entrepreneur began scheduled international passenger flights in 1920, initially from Key West, Florida to Havana, Cuba. Soon other routes were added such as, between Miami and the Bahamas, between New York and Havana. There is also a Midwest, between Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan. His company was named ?Aeromarine airways? it has 15 flying boats and made 2,000+ flights with 10,000 passengers. A plane crash killing four people made Aeromarine Airways lose business in 1924.

The birth of U.S. commercial air transportation and United Airlines was when Walter T. Varney began contract airmail services from Pasco, Washington, and Elko, Nevada, through Boise, Idaho.

Seven years after the first official airmail flight, 1925, U.S. Post Office airplanes sent 14 million letters, packages a year. Airmail was very popular with bankers and businessmen.

It was in 1926 when Air Commerce Act was implemented, this authorized the Secretary of Commerce to plan air routes, build up air navigation systems, test and license pilots and aircrafts, and investigate accidents. The carriers were then obliged by law to base pay to the weight of mail. This all started with the appointment of Dwight Morrow to develop a national aviation policy.

In the 1920s, Harry Guggenheim a multimillionaire and aviation enthusiast started a foundation, which aims on teaching aeronautical engineers and developing flight instruments. He gave funding to the Western Air Express to check if airlines can live on passenger fares alone, but the company barely made enough money without airmail.

Investments in aviation stocks significantly rose between 1927 and 1929. This was brought about by Charles A. Lindbergh?s solo flight to Paris.

Travelers could cross the country faster by train than by air at the end of 1920s. It was not comfortable to travel by plane because of the un-insulated thin sheets of metal that made noise in the wind. The cabins were not pressurized. In spite of this, airline passengers in the U.S. grew in number from 6,000 to 173,000 in the span of 1926 to 1929. Majority were businessmen.

U.S. Airlines? planes have enough capacity for 15 passengers. Fuselage has a corrugated design and the plane depends on a Ford Trimotor 5-AT.

In the 1920s, manufacturers transferred near airports. There were aeronautical schools that taught airplane engineering, design, and operation. New technologies were being developed that gave potential for commercial aviation expansion.

Harry Guggenheim set up a full flight laboratory, which developed very helpful navigational tools like the barometer, artificial horizon and gyroscope and radio direction beacon for landing. In September 1929 James Doolittle a U.S. army lieutenant benefited from these tools when he had to land the plane without his vision.

Huge progress as it may seem still did not make passenger travel exclusive airlines profitable up to the 1930?s.

Choosing a Florida Drug Rehab Center | ArticlePDQ.com

Coming to grips with the fact that you or someone you love has a drug abuse or drug addiction problem is the first step in a cure. There is little else that can have the dire effects on a family- legally, financially and relationship-wise than having an addicted family member. Statistics show that over 20 million people in the United States should have professional treatment for drug addiction or alcohol abuse. In reality, only 10 percent of those in need receive care at a certified drug rehab or even an outpatient addiction treatment facility. Drug abuse destroys families and individuals but with the right support and treatment at a Florida drug rehab center, recovery is possible.

An inpatient Florida drug rehab center like that at Transitions Recovery offers several advantages for addiction treatment, and they will personalize a treatment program specifically to the needs of the individual patient.

You will certainly want to work with a Florida drug rehab center like Transitions Recovery that offers:

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY ? When utilized as a part of an overall recovery program, cognitive behavioral therapy is highly effective in treating drug addiction. The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy is to teach the person short-term coping skills to attain sobriety and long-term skills for its maintenance.

COMFORT- There are few places in the U.S. that can be called sub-tropical and Miami, Florida is one. Our patients come from all over the U.S. during all seasons of the year. The bright sunshine, warm temperatures, colorful flowers and lush foliage of our beautiful gated Florida drug rehab facility have a natural uplifting effect on our patients. Ambient conditions can have a huge impact on recovery.

DETOXIFICATION- Chronic substance abusers will undergo supervised withdrawal during detox. All traces of toxic drugs will be removed from the patient?s system while their withdrawal is being monitored and controlled.

DUAL-DIAGNOSIS THERAPY- Quite often a patient will come to us with a co-occurring disorder such as depression, insomnia or anxiety often because they became addicted to drugs while trying to self-medicate their symptoms. Dual-diagnosis therapy treats the underlying disorder as well as the addiction, making long-term sobriety possible.

FAMILY THERAPY- Greater success is achieved by recognizing addiction as a family disease and teaching the family new coping skills and how to mitigate the feelings of pain, inadequacy and hopelessness.

INPATIENT TREATMENT- Inpatient treatment is a formal, Florida drug rehab center residential program that includes detox, education, medical treatment, individual and group therapy, and when indicated a 12-step program.

OUTPATIENT TREATMENT- Outpatient treatment is often used as follow-up treatment after an inpatient program.

SOBRIETY HOUSE LIVING- A group of recovering addicts live together in order to support each other and provide an environment free of alcohol and drugs. Sober living is recommended for people who have just completed residential treatment and are at risk of a relapse if they return home right away.

Good Florida drug rehab centers like Transitions Recovery offer additional treatment programs that help the whole family. Recovery from drug addiction is a long-term process that often requires multiple approaches and a variety of treatment options in order to treat the individual?s multiple needs. No single treatment is appropriate for every person, which is why an effective Florida drug rehab center will evaluate each patient?s individual needs and tailor a drug treatment program specifically for them.

The 6 Best Facebook Games of 2012

Sim City Social

While city building games are all over Facebook, it was nice to see the king return in 2012. Sim City has set the standard for city design since the 1980s, and the Facebook version brings back so many of the great features players love. Sim City Social capitalizes on players constructing cities with their friends, and how those relationships can form. While it still follows the conventions of a social game (energy consumption, bug your friends to improve), it offers a deeper and more customizable play experience. If anything, it serves as a nice way to curb the cravings for the PC Sim City release coming out next year.

Let's face it: Most Facebook games aren't great. The constant bombardment of notifications, the suggestions to buy extra stuff at every turn, and the zillion popups are all hallmarks of an ecosystem that irritates serious gamers.

Mark Zuckerberg asserted earlier this year that 291 million Facebook users played games through the social network. While massive titles like FarmVille and Words With Friends claim the lion's share of the users, Facebook has a diverse range of games that many may appreciate.

London buses now accept NFC contactless payments, if you have the magic logo

Transport for London has emailed customers to announce the activation of NFC contactless payments on the city's fleet of 8,500 buses, despite any hiccups on the tube. From today, anyone who swipes a debit, credit, or charge card with the logo shown after the break should theoretically be allowed onboard for the same single fare as a traditional Oyster Card user. That's £1.35 instead of the £2.30 cash fare. The logo can also be found on Orange's Quick Tap-enabled Galaxy S III, but the official email makes no explicit mention of any smartphones being compatible. If you have the guts to swipe your GS III over the reader and test it, please let us know if it works (and it's probably better to try it discreetly, in case it doesn't). Customers are also being advised to avoid swiping wallets which contain two potential payment methods -- such as an NFC card and an RFID-based Oyster Card -- so they can control which card gets billed.

PFT: 'I did enough to feel confident,' RG3 says

Josh BrentAP

The memorial service for former Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown was moving for the team at many levels.

But Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he was amazed by the compassion shown by Brown?s mother, Stacey Jackson.

After losing her son in a one-car wreck for which Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was arrested for intoxication manslaughter, Jackson invited Brent to ride with her to the memorial service.

Brent and Brown were friends and teammates at Illinois, and Brown was staying with Brent after being signed to the Cowboys? practice squad. Brent?s free on $500,000 bond, and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

?It was as remarkable a thing as I?ve ever seen in my life to be honest with you,? Garrett said of Jackson, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. ?I spoke to her after the game and got a chance to visit with her prior to the memorial. And the strength that demonstrates, the faith that she has, her ability to understand and have peace in this situation so quickly is remarkable. She?s been a rock for everybody, and she was again yesterday. And she really was remarkable.

?And you can tell that she has so much love, and her family has so much love for Josh, and there?s been a real connection there for a long time. The closeness they?ve had since they were together at Illinois and since they?ve been down here. She loves and cares about him very much. She, too, wants to support him in any way that she can, along with us and everybody here at the Cowboys.

?Again, it was remarkable. She?s a really, really strong woman. A special woman, in light of these circumstances. It?s like nothing I?ve ever seen.?

There?s no reason, other than an incredible capacity for forgiveness, for Jackson to have ever spoken to Brent again.

At her time of great pain, she opened her heart to the man who caused it, showing a strength many would not have in a similar situation.

Middle East has the most politically vocal social networkers

9 hrs.

The old rule that says "Don't talk about politics and religion" doesn't apply to the people in the Middle East who have discovered?Facebook and Twitter. In fact, according to a new report, social networking in that region has become a vital tool precisely for sharing views on?politics, community issues and religion ? much more so than anywhere else in the world.

In Egypt and Tunisia, "two nations at the heart of the Arab Spring, more than six-in-ten social networkers share their views about?politics online," says?the Pew Research Center in its Global Attitudes Project?report.

In contrast with the other nations surveyed, "a median of only 34 percent post their political opinions."

"Of all the countries we surveyed, it?s the Arab nations that are most interested in discussing politics online," Richard Wike, Pew Research Center associate director, told NBC News. "In Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan and Lebanon, solid majorities of people who use social networking sites say they share their views about politics on these sites. That?s a much higher rate than in other nations."

In those four countries, more than 70?percent?use social networks to?share their?views on community issues, compared with a "cross-national median of just 46 percent"?worldwide.

Italy and Turkey are?the only other countries surveyed by Pew where the majority of those who use social networking have expressed views about community issues (64 percent and 63 percent, respectively).

In the United States, 47 percent of social network users talk about community issues;?37 percent talk politics; and 32 percent discuss religion.

"Many people still don?t have access to the Internet in Arab nations,"?Wike said. In fact, fewer than half of Pew's survey respondents in Middle East countries used the Internet at all.?"But those who do?tend to get involved in social networking, and those who go on social networking sites tend to share their views about politics."

Pew?and researchers worldwide interviewed more than 20,000 people total in 21 countries last spring: Brazil, Britain, China, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and the U.S.

A majority of social networking users in Tunisia (63 percent), Egypt (63 percent) and Jordan (62 percent) are "also more likely than those in other countries to say they have posted about religion," much?higher than other nations,?Pew said.

"In 14 countries, only about a third or less have posted on this topic."

Pew's findings come at a time when the the idea of the Arab Spring may have become a nostalgic notion of the past, at least online.

Syria recently shut off, then reinstated, Internet access. And in the past year or so,?Internet access has been on and?off for other countries, including Pakistan, Bahrain and Ethiopia, according to the?U.S. watchdog group Freedom on the Net.

Jillian C. York, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's director for international freedom of expression, recently?observed Dec. 10 as "Human Rights Day," as created by the United Nations, writing that "while the spread of the Internet has created an environment in which???in theory???anyone can be a writer, a photographer, a filmmaker or a pundit, the reality is such that nearly half of the world's citizens access a fractured, fragmented Internet, and the threat of persecution for speaking out causes even more to censor their online speech."

It's important for everyone to remember that "the right to?free expression must be guaranteed whether we're shouting from the rooftops or from our Facebook walls," she wrote.

Judge: George Zimmerman must keep GPS monitor on

George Zimmerman was rebuffed by a Florida judge in his request today to remove the GPS tracking device he must wear and be allowed to leave Seminole County so that he would not have to live in hiding while awaiting trial for shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman, who is currently out of jail on a $1 million bond, appeared in court today, noticeably stockier, clad in a dark suit and presumably a bulletproof vest as he typically wears in public.

In seeking permission to remove the tracking device, defense attorney Mark O'Mara put Adam Vincent, Zimmerman's probation officer, on the stand. Vincent testified that Zimmerman has always complied with the terms of his probation.

O'Mara argued that Zimmerman has "shown himself where he should be free" and should not be restricted to Seminole County because it does not allow him to speak with attorneys, expert witnesses or to help his attorneys prepare for the upcoming trial.

Zimmerman "shouldn't have to be in hiding," O'Mara told the court. Zimmerman, 28, has been in hiding since he received death threats following the shooting death of the unarmed teenager on Feb. 26.

Lead prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda argued that the state "objects strenuously to any modification of his GPS or his boundaries" and reminded Judge Debra Nelson that Zimmerman lied to the court about how much money he could provide for bond and neglected to mention the existence of a second passport.

De La Rionda argued that the GPS is as much for Zimmerman's protection as it is for the state's benefit.

"Isn't the defendant safer if law enforcement knows exactly where he is?" De La Rionda asked.

The judge denied Zimmerman's request, requiring him to continue wearing the GPS tracker and remain in Seminole County, except to visit his attorneys in Orange County.

The two sides also wrangled over identifying the voice heard screaming for help during the deadly confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin.

Members of Zimmerman's family said the voice was his, while Martin's family claimed the voice belonged to the teenager. Martin's father initially said the voice was not his son, but when he heard it with heightened clarity, said it was Trayvon.

Defense Attorney Don West argued that the defense is obligated to know which witnesses have heard the audio and identified who it was yelling on the calls. The judge countered, saying that anyone could have now heard the audio on the internet and that the prosecution has no greater obligation than to disclose whether or not each witness made a statement to law enforcement.

The hearing, like previous hearings, turned into a mini-trial complete with witnesses and cross examination. At one point in today's court session the prosecution brought up Zimmerman's comments on MySpace that made derogatory statements about Mexicans, while the defense showed newly released color photos of Zimmerman's bloodied and bruised nose taken the night of the shooting.

Zimmerman is charged with murder, but he claims he shot Martin in self defense while struggling over his pistol after Martin knocked him down and bashed his head against the cement. The trial is scheduled for June 13.

Most popular weight-loss drug strongly alters other drug therapies, study suggests

Dec. 10, 2012 ? A University of Rhode Island researcher has discovered that the weight-loss drug orlistat, known by the brand names Xenical and Alli, inhibits a key enzyme that may lead to "severe toxicity of internal organs such as the liver and kidney." The inhibition is irreversible and can be caused by a low level of the drug.

Professor Bingfang Yan's study funded by the National Institutes of Health, also found that the drug alters efficacy of medicines, and particularly limits the effectiveness of some anti-cancer drugs.

Part of the research results will be published in the journal, Biochemical Pharmacology, which has the article posted on its website December 10. Yan also alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to his findings.

Orlistat, which was originally approved by the FDA in 1999 as the prescription drug Exenical, was approved in 2007 as the over-the-counter medication Alli. It has been the most commonly used medicine to treat obesity for more than a decade, Yan said.

"Since it has been available over-the-counter, there has been a drastic increase of toxicity among patients using the drug," Yan said. "It has been linked to severe liver failure, acute pancreatic failure and acute renal (kidney) failure."

Yan said orlistat works in the intestinal tract by preventing fat from being absorbed by the body. It is generally accepted that orlistat remains in the intestine and that the body does not absorb it.

"But orlistat is reportedly absorbed, and certainly internal organs such as the liver and kidney are exposed to this drug upon absorption," he said.

The study showed that the drug is a potent inhibitor of carboxylesterase-2, which is a major detoxification enzyme in the liver, kidney and gastrointestinal track. "When the activity of this enzyme drop in those organs, toxicity increases or the efficacy of some drugs are altered," Yan said.

The enzyme is known to metabolize a wide range of medicines including aspirin and the cancer drugs irinotecan and pentyl carbamate of p-aminobenzyl carbamate of doxazolidine.

"This study shows that orlistat profoundly alters the therapeutic potential of the anti-cancer drugs," Yan said. "In the case of the anti-cancer drugs, it weakens their effectiveness."

Prior or co-presence of orlistat with one of the anti-cancer drugs resulted in cancer cells being far more prolific.

"Alli-based interactions can be key factors in the efficacy of medicines," Yan said.

Yan was also interested in Alli's effects on aspirin and its use as a blood thinner. "Aspirin is used to treat blood clots. Yan predicated: "Orlistat would increase the therapeutic potential of aspirin, which may increase the tendency of bleeding."

This isn't the first time that Yan has found critical drug interactions in his studies.

In 2006, he discovered that the anti-viral drug Tamiflu would be rendered ineffective in patients also taking the anti-clotting drug Plavix. His published findings have resulted in new dosing regimens for patients who need both drugs.

Will Simon Cowell Have to Judge Two 'X Factors'?

For several years now, Simon Cowell has appeared to be on a quest to take over the world, one televised talent competition at a time. But juggling singing shows across two continents is no easy feat. Just as the U.S. version of The X Factor (Fox, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET) has been gaining momentum, the U.K. version of the show has been losing steam. And now there are whispers that Cowell might have to rescue the original show. In other words, take his personal star power back to his native Britain, and resume judging there again.
