Rhapsody Updates Windows Phone 8 App With Offline Playback

Rhapsody Windows Phone 8

Digital music service Rhapsody on Friday released a new version of its app for Windows Phone 8 devices with a number of new features and improvements.

Version 3.0 brings one feature users should be happy about - offline playback of downloaded tracks, albums, and playlists, according to a Friday blog post from Microsoft. This means users won't need an Internet connection to listen to tunes they have downloaded.

The update also adds support for the My Music user profile functionality. Users can now view their music library; save artists, albums, and tracks to their profile; and check out other people's collections.

The latest version also lets users add and remove stations and playlists, as well as their listening history. Finally, it brings some improvements to audio playback, album art, and the search functionality.

The Rhapsody app is free in the Windows Phone Marketplace. "The update just started its rollout, so if you don't see it, check back a little later," Microsoft said in the post. "If you already own the app, watch for an update notification on your phone."

Rhapsody isn't the only music service available on Windows Phone 8. Earlier this month, music-streaming service Spotify landed on Windows Phone 8 after several months of delay. Most of Spotify's services are only available to subscribers on mobile, but there is a free Internet radio option.

Meanwhile, Rhapsody recently teamed up with Ford to bring its on-demand music service to cars and trucks equipped with the auto maker's Sync AppLink feature. The company is also taking on music-recognition services like Shazam with a new Android app called Rhapsody SongMatch, which lets users discover music with one click.
